Every year a Capurso, on the eve of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, "la Fanoje".
The "Fanoje"It is perhaps the oldest local festival, blending sacred and secular meanings. It revives the tradition whereby preparations for Christmas celebrations began on the evening of December 7th.
Once upon a time, bonfires were lit in every street of the town.Fanoje" which were proudly prepared by the residents of the neighborhoods with the help of the farmers, who brought olive branches and vine shoots from the countryside. Even the children helped, thus creating moments of great joy. According to legend, the bonfires were intended to serve the Madonna so she could dry the diapers of Baby Jesus, and also, according to a more profane vision, to drive evil spirits from the village. The fire, in fact, represented purification and was a good omen for the new year of work in the fields and stables. Around the bonfires, people used to recount Gospel episodes relating to the season of Advent. When the Fanoje It had burned down, and on the street there remained a huge carpet of burning wood, with which everyone filled a brazier to keep the flame of faith alive, but also, why not? to keep the house warm during the night. Around the fire, it was also customary to consume fresedde, fried chickpeas, calzone of onion, all washed down with a good glass of wine. The music of a mandolin then started the dancing. Today, the "Fanoje” there is only one and it lights up in Piazza Gramsci, the oldest square in the town.
