Born in Capurso on May 6, 1650, Domenico Tanzella He is remembered for the Miracle of the Well. A pious priest of the village, seriously ill and at the point of death, saw the Madonna in a dream who invited him to drink the water from the well of Santa Maria to heal from his terrible illness. The well was located in the Piscino district on the right of the road that led to noicattaroThe relatives rushed to fetch water from the well indicated by the Virgin and brought it to the priest. Tanzella drank it and was miraculously healed.
On August 30, 1705, the priest, accompanied by the painter Gian Battista Converso, his brother Lorenzo, and Michelangelo Portincasa, lowered himself into the Piscino well. The candle he was holding fell into the water and miraculously stayed put. Then, to his great amazement, he discovered an icon of the Virgin on the wall. This icon detached itself from the wall and fell into the priest's arms. Thus, the chapel of San Lorenzo, also named Santa Maria del Pozzo, was built to bear witness to the events of August 1705.
Tanzella died on October 5, 1730, and was buried in the chapel of San Lorenzo, next to the icon of the Madonna found in the well. His bones were later transferred, on June 8, 1752, to the inner church of the convent built by the Alcantarine friars.
